Lockheed Martin and Leonardo have signed an agreement to explore expanded maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for C-130J Super Hercules airlifters across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
Under the agreement, Lockheed Martin plans to further integrate Leonardo into its global C-130 support network as an MRO centre for operators in these regions. The initiative is intended to strengthen regional maintenance capabilities and support the long-term sustainment of C-130J fleets.
As the opportunity develops, Lockheed Martin will look to provide Leonardo with technical assistance, equipment and training to enhance relevant capabilities at its facilities in Italy. The companies may also explore additional business opportunities related to C-130J maintenance and sustainment.
More than 570 C-130J aircraft have been delivered to a global partner network covering 27 countries. Of these, 16 countries across Europe and MENA could potentially use the Italian MRO facility, creating a broader regional support opportunity for the aircraft.
An enhanced MRO service centre in Italy would provide C-130J operators across the region with OEM-certified and continuously updated maintenance services. The facility could support improved planning, proximity and fleet readiness while contributing to greater efficiency and interoperability across NATO’s C-130J fleet in Europe.
The proposed cooperation builds on a relationship between Lockheed Martin and Leonardo that spans approximately 20 years. The companies have worked together to provide technical and logistical support for the Italian Air Force’s C-130J Super Hercules fleet.
Leonardo also brings extensive experience in tactical airlifter maintenance through its long-standing role as the OEM and MRO provider of the multi-mission C-27J aircraft. Several air forces operate the C-27J alongside the C-130J, using the aircraft as a complementary capability for missions requiring agility, short-field performance and rapid reconfiguration.
Trish Pagan, Vice President, Lockheed Martin Air Mobility and Maritime Missions, said approved C-130 service centres contribute to fleet readiness and resilience as operational requirements evolve. She also highlighted the potential for the cooperation with Leonardo to strengthen capabilities in Europe and support future expansion into other regions.
Tommaso Pani, SVP Marketing and Sales, Leonardo Aeronautics, said the company’s expanded role in the C-130J MRO market would increase its responsibility for supporting fleets across the region. He highlighted Leonardo’s existing MRO capabilities and its objective of providing the responsiveness required by C-130J operators.
The proposed Italian MRO centre would add to the C-130J support network and could provide operators across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa with additional access to OEM-certified maintenance and sustainment capabilities.
